Grow Sound Cells in a Petri Dish — Expetri, an Experimental Synthesizer for Sparking Inspiration, Released

Indie developer Expetri released its self-titled software synthesizer, Expetri, on October 10, 2026, built around the metaphor of a chemistry experiment. Rather than dialing in a specific target sound, Expetri takes a new approach: growing sound cells in a petri dish to discover unknown sounds.

Key Features

  • Living sound cells in a petri dish: At the center of the UI, sound cells split, merge, and interfere with each other's waveforms (morphing) as they drift and constantly change shape — an organic sound-generation system built around this behavior.
  • An intuitive, experiment-like interaction: Instead of fine-tuning parameters, you shape the sound through playful interactions — stirring the petri dish, adding or removing sound cells with a pipette, and pouring liquids (effects) from beakers and flasks.
  • Inspiration born from serendipity: Casual, playful actions can lead to sounds you've never heard before. Stirring the petri dish can unexpectedly produce a "rare cell," opening the door to countless combinations and further new sounds.

Development Background: Freedom from Painstaking Sound Design

Fine-tuning knobs to build the perfect sound can be deeply satisfying, but in modern music production it can also be exhausting. Expetri was born from a simple question: could we create a moment, in between project work, to step away from the pressure of hunting for the "right answer" and instead "grow" sound through intuition and chance? Whenever your daily production hits a wall, or you're looking for a spark of an idea, we hope that quietly opening Expetri and playing with it leads you to inspiration you didn't expect.
